Reviews of the 15 most comfortable wedge sole work boots on the market

Alright, let’s jump into some detailed reviews of each one of these great wedge sole work boots we’ve included in today’s round-up.

By the way, they are listed in no particular order!

1. Thorogood American Heritage

This Thorogood American Heritage boot is a product that is made for the world of work.

Whether you’re a professional in construction or working in a warehouse, this pair of boots will provide you with the comfort and protection you need to crush your workday and produce excellence in whatever industry you pursue.

This pair of American-made work boots utilize tobacco oil-tanned full-grain leather for the upper materials. It’s a beautiful leather and it’s quite supple which means you won’t have to go through weeks or months of breaking in period.

These Thorogod wedge sole work boots are comfortable right ouf the box in that aspect!

These Thorogood work boots are available with a steel toe cap for those of you that appreciate having a safety cap in case something might fall on your toes.

But it’s also available with a soft toe box if you’re working more light-duty jobs. I’ve created a little table below with other versions of these boots that you might be interested in.

And of course, this work boot is a wedge sole work boot. The wedge on these boots is the famous MaxWear wedge sole which according to Thorogod last about 30% more than other wedge soles out there.

It has high density though which means it’s a bit harder (altough still comfortable) when compared to other wedge sole boots in this round-up!

PROS

  • Stylish wedge work boots
  • MaxWear wedge soles last longer
  • Steel toe cap for extra protection
  • Made in the USA- so buying this boot supports American jobs and industry
  • Other models available

CONS

  • Not waterproof

2. Brunt Marin Toe

Comp Toe Wedge Sole Work Boots With Anti Scuff Bumper

This is the new Marin Toe wedge sole work boot which comes with a toe cap bumper. The only feature in this wedge sole work boots list that actually comes with this feature.

It’s excellent for those of you that work a lot on your knees (think electricians, plumbers, tile and floor and carpet installers) because it will protect the leather at the toe cap area.

The wedge sole in these Marin boots is a bit more comfortable providing more cushioning than the Thorogood wedges mentioned above.

And this is thanks to a dual compound wedge sole where the midsole is made out of foam rubber (PU) and then we have a thin layer of harder rubber on the outsole to add more durability to the sole.

These boots were great for me wearing them on a construction site. Comfortable from day one thanks to the padding that comes into the side walls of the boots.

The collar of the boot dig a bit into my ankle for the first couple of days but that’s about it in terms of downsides for me.

If you’re looking for a pair of waterproof wedge sole work boots then you’ll be happy to hear that these come with a waterproof membrane and it does its job.

It kept my feet dry when we had rainy days and also when I had to walk or stay in water puddles.

In comparison to other wedge sole work boots featured here, these Brunt work boots are built using the cemented sole method vs the Goodyear welt method.

Using this method bootmakers create boots that are more flexible and a tiny bit more lightweight.

On the other hand, they’re not as sturdy as work boots made using the Goodyear welt method. And they’re not easy to resole either.

Read my full in-depth review of these Brunt Marin Toe wedge sole boots…

PROS

  • Cushioning wedge sole
  • Waterproof
  • Composite safety toe
  • TPU Toe cap bumper
  • Quality leather upper

CONS

  • They’re not as sturdy as other boots featured here so I don’t recommend them for heavy-duty jobs.

3. Irish Setter Wingshooter

Waterproof Rubber-EVA
Wedge Sole Work Boots

My colleague Adam is wearing these boots in a welding and metal fabrication workshop so he’s up on his feet pretty much all day, either standing at the press machine, welding, or walking.

This means that Adam needed a pair of comfortable work boots that do great on concrete floors. And these Irish Setter Wingshooter are great for the job.

The wedge soles on these boots are very interesting because they seem to have a triple-layer composition. So we have a thin EVA midsole underneath the Goodyear welt followed by a much thicker EVA layer as out/midsole.

And the last layer of the outsole is a thin layer of rubber which helps with traction, and good grip, and also increases the durability of the outsole overall.

It comes with a ton of good features such as a waterproof membrane, composite toe cap, and additional stitching under the sole for extra durability.

Also if you want to resole them later down the road you will be able to do so because these boots come with a Goodyear welt.

Another interesting thing about these boots is that the welt is made out of leather which is not something common to see in boots in this price range.

This is better than TPU welts because these TPU welts tend to crack and break faster than leather. Especially because you can condition the leather to make it last longer.

Read Adam’s full in-depth review of these Irish Setter Wingshooter wedge sole boots…

PROS

  • Safety toe cap
  • Goodyear welt
  • Lightweight wedge sole
  • Waterproof
  • Arch support

CONS

  • The leather is embossed, some might like it, some might not. It’s great for Adam because it’s helpful against scuffs.

4. Avenger Chelsea A7505

If you’re looking for an affordable pair of slip-on Chelsea-style work boots I present you the Avenger A7505.

I initially bought these work boots because I was very intrigued by the brand since it was keeping popping up on my radar. And since there was;t much info on these boots, I end up buying pair to test them out.

I was actually surprised by the quality of the boots considering the money you pay for them. Good full grain leather, lovely colors, TPU toe cap bumper, and heel guard that helps expand the lifespan of the boots.

And on top of all that the boots have a waterproof membrane too. One thing to keep in mind if you end up liking this boot and want to buy it is that it’s quite roomy.

There’s a lot of space inside this boot, at least in the size I bought them which is 10D. So this might be a great work boot if you have wide feet, if you suffer from bunions, or have hammer toes going on.

The wedge sole is on par with the other soles we’ve seen in this round-up when it comes to the sole density and how cushiony/hard they are. They seem to be a bit less harder than the Thorogood’s wedges but harder than the Irish Setters’.

Good wedge sole slip-on work boots for less than $150. Happy with the purchase.

PROS

  • Affordable wedge sole boots
  • Slip-on convenience
  • Toe cap bumper
  • Waterproof membrane
  • Composite toe cap

CONS

  • No heel counter

5. KEEN Fort Wayne

Now this is a different type of wedge sole than you’ll normally think of. Not the typical white sole you see in most wedge sole work boots out there.

They are also made out of PU (polyurethane) as most wedge soles are, but KEEN put a spin on it.

By the way, they call it KEEN Luftcell outsole which features close to 100,000 air bubbles per cubic centimeter to create a lightweight, comfortable wedge sole for walking and standing all day.

These boots are being tested by my friend and fellow boots tester, Tim, who works in the HVAC industry.

Tim is impressed by the level of comfort and quality of these boots out of the box. One thing he wasn’t really sure of was the toe cap bumper. He wasn’t a big fan of that feature.

But if you’re working a job similar to Tim’s where you need to crawl under things, kneel or crouch a lot, then this is a great feature that will expand the lifespan of your boots. He’s kinda getting into it now.

And being waterproof wedge sole boots it’s a big bonus for Tim since he’s dealing with water and chemicals on a daily basis.

This feature should not only keep the feet dry but also will protect your feet if you’re spilling chemicals by accident.

Read Tim’s in-depth review of these KEEN For Wayne wedge sole work boots…

PROS

  • Airy wedge sole
  • Toe cap bumper
  • Waterproof membrane
  • Deeper lugs
  • Safety toe cap

CONS

  • No heel counter to protect the waterproof membrane.

6. Ever Boots Weldor

Cheap Wedge Sole Work Boots

If you are looking for an affordable pair of work boots with wedge soles, ones that will be ready for work on day one without breaking the bank, then the Weldor boots from Ever are the pick for you.

These soft, oil full-grain leather boots are a lot easier to break in than more traditional tobacco oil full-grain leather work boots, giving you a more comfortable experience on the job site.

These boots are also water repellant, allowing you to operate in rainy or damp environments with confidence.  (don’t be overconfident though, water will start going though if it doesn’t get dry fast)

And while you can use laces to adjust the fit on this work boot more easily than a pull-on, this work boot also has the advantages of Speed hooks and a backloop that make them easier than a typical laced work boot to put on and take off.

Finally, this work boot utilizes Goodyear Welt Construction; one of the toughest standards of boot welting in the industry. It also includes additional reinforcement on the toe stitch for added durability and the ability to withstand wear and tear.

These work boots come in at one of the most competitive price points in this entire roundup. There is no need to spend a fortune when you are buying good quality work boots.

PROS

  • Soft-oil full grain leather work boots are much easier to break-in than other kinds of leather
  • Good value for money and an excellent price point
  • Goodyear Welt Construction
  • True to size fitting

CONS

  • A few customers have expressed concern about the uneven stitching on these work boots

7. Danner Bull Run

6” Lightweight Wedge
Sole Work Boots

Danner has an extensive range of dozens of wedge sole work boots. However one of the best in their range is the Bull Run work boot.

The boot contains a wedge sole, ensuring weight is evenly distributed across your feet when you are working on concrete floors– reducing the risks of knee, feet, and ankle pains.

These work boots are partially made in the USA, so when you make this purchase you are helping boost the domestic economy and help keep jobs in the country.

And the uppers are also made from durable, oiled full-grain upper leather for maximum durability and comfort.

This amazing pair of work boots also feature a steel shank. This will minimize your risk of injury on the job by protecting your feet from punctures and giving them adequate support as you walk around.

One more amazing feature of these work boots is the OrthoLite footbed which will cushion your feet through a long working day.

OrthoLite is a synthetic urethane foam that has two major benefits.

It is less toxic than other foams commonly found in the market because it contains no rubber and few if any, formaldehyde-related adhesives.

And it allows for resiliency under compression due to its honeycomb cell structure that springs back after every compressible load. This provides protection of the human foot throughout many hours of walking or standing each day by cushioning shock and reducing shearing forces.

PROS

  • Durable uppers made from oiled full-grain leather.
  • Steel shank for maximal comfort and protection.
  • At least partially made in the USA- a good purchase for those of you looking to support American jobs and families in these tough economic times.
  • Features electrical hazard protection that meets ASTM F2892-11 EH standards.

CONS

  • Some people who have bought these work boots have found them uncomfortable to wear, with concerns that the toe box pinches your toes as you walk around.

8. Ariat Golden Grizzly

Composite Toe Wedge Sole Work Boot

Ariat’s Grizzly work boot is a great choice for anyone who spends all day on their feet.

The sole of these work boots utilizes Ariat’s unique 4LR technology which provides support and cushioning for excellent support.

The advantage of 4LR technology is that it provides a more secure balance than comparable midsole designs.

It also features a composite safety toe that is ASTM F2413-18 M I/C EH rated and is much more lightweight than steel.

The full-grain leather upper is flexible, giving this work boot the best combination of long-lasting durability with comfort.

And while these amazing work boots come with summer brown laces for an adjustable fit, Ariat has also released a similar boot in a pull-on variety which can be found here.

Also, if you want to see what other similar boots are available with this type of toe protection make sure to read our best composite toe work boots round up!

PROS

  • Strong full-grain leather
  • Supportive 4LR technology unique to Ariat
  • Laces for an adjustable fit

CONS

  • Not all worksites will accept a composite toe cap – many will want steel.

9. Chippewa Edge Walker

Lace Up Wedge Sole Work Boots

Chippewa Edge Walker waterproof work boot is built to keep you comfortable and protected on the job.

These lace-up boots are made with high-quality leathers that can take a beating while keeping your feet dry thanks to waterproof construction.

These soft toe work boots offers minimum protection against rough surfaces as well as a stylish look, and the removable cushioned footbed helps ensure all day comfort.

Whether you’re working on a construction site or a well-ordered warehouse, staying comfortable is important to crushing your work and career goals.

Finally, as I am sure you have noticed, this is a very tall work boot. A taller ankle provides more support for your feet, and prevents the development of long-term pains.

Interested in this work boot but want to make a few modifications?

There is a slip-on composite toe version here, perfect for the worker who needs a slightly more lightweight pair of boots.

And for those who need a lower heel for more flexibility, the Six Inch Edge Walker is an excellent selection.

PROS

  • Lightweight composite toe cap.
  • Eight inch heel shaft for additional support.
  • Moc Toe stitching for durability and style.

CONS

  • The eight inch heel shaft is less flexible than a six inch shaft.

10. Carhartt

Moc Toe Wedge Sole Work Boots

Carhartt make many exceptional work boots, however this 6 Inch waterproof wedge steel toe work boot is one of the best wedge sole work boots in their extensive range.

Developed from one of the leading manufacturers of work boots in the world, this work boot utilises Storm Defender Waterproof Breathable Protection to keep your feet dry come rain, thunder or hail.

These boots also utilise a moc toe. Moc toe boots are lace-up boots, made with a Moc-toe stitching on the sole (the vamp). They are typically be soft leather or suede and come in either an almond or round toe shape.

Moc toes are very common around wedge sole work boots.

The full-grain leather upper provides durability and abrasion resistance, while the Goodyear welt construction allows you to resole the boots when needed. These work boots are ready to go from day one with no need for a break-in time.

PROS

  • Storm Proofing technology that will keep your feet dry.
  • Moc Toe construction for style.
  • Soft full-grain leather for a quick break-in time.

These boots are made to be worn all day long without discomfort or fatigue.

The wedge sole is a great choice for construction workers who need lightweight, comfortable and easy-to-clean bottoms.

Unlike the pattern on Lugged Soles that can cause tripping hazards like rivets or heels getting caught in parts of the boot, these boots have an open design which allows you to walk freely without any worries about safety.

  • Wedge Sole for maximal support and safety.
  • Steel Safety toe which meets ATSM standards.
  • Goodyear welt construction, which is one of the most reliable in the industry.

12. Georgia

8 Inch Steel Toe Wedge
Sole Work Boots

Designed for comfort and security, this Georgia wedge sole work booot is a must-have in any work environment.

The steel toe offers protection against sudden impacts while Flex-Notched quarters enable your feet to bend with ease.

A full grain leather upper ensures durability no matter what kind of terrain you encounter on the job site, ensuring that this boot remains as tough as ever even after hours of wear time.

Rest assured knowing that every step taken will be cushioned by an insulating insole so you’ll never have sore or tired soles again!

Finally, this pair of work boots utilises SPR leather, which is a chemically treated leather that has been re-tanned and refreshed to restore its original appearance, increase its resilience, and make it tougher.

This process makes it three times stronger and 2.5 times more abrasion resistant than conventional leathers.

It’s more expensive than standard working boot leathers, but it makes a boot much more resistant to water.

This results in increased safety when dealing with slick or wet surfaces – not to mention an extended life of the work boots for daily wear.

PROS

  • SPR leather for higher aesthetics and improved waterproofing.
  • Cushioned insole for all-day comfort.
  • Flex-Notched quarters which allow your feet to walk around with ease.
  • Durable full-grain leather.

CONS

13. Irish Setter Ashby

Wait, did you say you’re looking for very lightweight wedge-sole safety work boots? Well, then you need to stop looking because these Irish Setter Ashby work boots are exactly what you’re looking for.

Lightweight aluminum safety toe cap, lightweight wedge sole made out of a combination of EVA for comfort and a thin layer of rubber to give you a better grip on smooth surfaces.

This is another pair of wedge sole work boots tested by my colleague Adam in his metal sheet fabrication and welding shop.

He’s saying these boots are his whop slippers. That’s how comfy and lightweight they are.

This work boot utilizes Trout Back Leather, a type of leather handcrafted by the S.B. Foot Tanning Company which is the same company that makes the leather for the Red Wing Heritage boots. Top quality!

The boots are Goodyear welted so you can resole them later down the road if the soles wear out. These Ashby boots in comparison with the Wingshooter have a TPU welt and as we said above it’s not as durable as the leather welts.

Not a big deal breaker though but I thought it might be important to you so there you have it.

  • Lightweight safety toe cap
  • Rubber + EVA wedge sole

  • Reinforced with crush resistant material

CONS

  • Not made in the USA

15. Timberland PRO

Non Steel Toe Wedge
Sole Work Boots

Timberland work boots were created after the company founder, Nathan Swartz, had a life-changing moment of clarity.

The idea for Timberland PRO’s Wedge Series footwear came to him while he was working as an ironworker in Manhattan’s World Trade Center site.

He noticed that his colleagues who were on their feet all day would often slide off ladders because they couldn’t feel where they stepped and needed more traction underfoot – which is why Zamberlan introduced its first flat sole shoe back in 1973!

Nowadays there are plenty of options out there with this type of design – but when it comes to quality craftsmanship and durable waterproofing from head down the boot shaft…you just can’t beat what these guys offer!

The Timberland PRO Wedge Sole 6″ Boot is perfect for those of you who wants to look great and feel even better.

These wedge sole boots feature a leather upper, lace-up design, and contrast platform sole for a classic look you’ll love. The EVA midsole offers comfort in every step while the durable rubber outsole provides traction on any surface.

This is the right boot for workers who want a comfortable boot that stands up to tough weather conditions on the job site.

This boot is also ideal for anyone looking for slip-resistance as the wedge sole is perfectly shaped for this.

  • Durable rubber sole with traction on any surface.
  • Made by a well-established manufacturer of work boots.
  • Six inch shaft for maximum flexibility.

CONS

  • Some users, albeit a small minority, have had an issue with the durability of these boots.

All You Need To Know About
Wedge Sole Work Boots

What are wedge sole boots for (brief history)

Wedge sole work boots are work boots with wedge soles that can be used in a variety of different job fields, such as factory, construction, automotive, and many more.

Wedge soles distribute the weight of your feet more evenly across surfaces, preventing the development of feet conditions.

Red Wing credit themselves with inventing the wedge sole and marketing them to professionals as early as 1905- this claim is to be taken with some scepticism.

Red Wing did play a leading role in popularising Red Wing boots in the 1980s.

They did not become popular until the 1980s- again Red Wing leading the way in popularising them.

They’ve become increasingly common in various industries due to their incredible versatility – they provide traction on icy sidewalks while also providing abrasion protection against slippery industrial floors.

You can learn more about this topic by reading our pros and cons of wedge sole vs heel sole work boots article here.

a pair of wedge sole work boots from the brand called Thorogood

Are wedge soles better than rubber and other soles?

Benefits of wedge soles

One benefit of wedge soles over traditional  rubber soles is that they’re more comfortable on the feet. They help absorb shock when walking or running, which helps reduce the pressure applied to your feet.

Because of this, there’s less fatigue and discomfort at the end of a long day on your feet.

Comfort is also a reason the entire sole is in contact with the floor which ensures weight is distributed across the entire length of your feet.

Finally, Wedge soles also have the advantage of being more stylish than the traditional rubber soles.

They can be customized to match the outfit that you’re wearing for an event or a night out with friends. Wedge sole work boots are also available in a variety of colors and styles, so you can choose exactly what you want!

Disadvantages

What are the disadvantages of wedge sole work boots?

Well one thing is for sure:  they’re not cheap. It should also be noted that they are also heavier than regular work boots, so if you do a lot of walking in your job, then this may not suit you.

One final thing to remember is that wedge soles provide less traction than rubber soles, so if you have an uneven surface then wedge soles are not necessarily the better choice.

Are wedge sole boots better for your back?

The wedge sole boot looks great, and the raised platform at the heel eliminates any heel pressure on your toes. They are usually higher quality than an ordinary cowboy boots made of leathers that are too thick.

And they’re also much more comfortable to wear, and better for your feet.

But there is a danger with wedge sole that less shock absorption transmits shock directly to joints and your back.

So overall, no, we do not think that wedge sole work boots are better for your back.

Who makes the best wedge sole work boots

Red Wing have been popularising Wedge Sole work boots for decades, and given they provide a comprehensive in-house resoling service. They are the best company to approach for your wedge sole work boot needs.

Are wedge sole boots more comfortable?

Yes, wedge sole work boots distribute pressures and shock across the entire width of your feet, making them much more comfortable than traditional heeled boots.

Where can buy wedge sole work boots?

You can buy your favorite pair of wedge sole work boots at your local store. It’s better because you try them on and have a feel about them.

However, many times you won’t find a model that you like or maybe a color. That’s why the best place to buy wedge sole work boots is at the online stores.

For the simple reason that you can access lots of brands and models from the comfort of your home. Plus the delivery, many times is free.

Here are a few stores you might be familiar with:

  • Amazon
