What You Must Know About
The Thorogood Work Boots
Who makes Thorogood work boots?
Thorogood work boots are made by the Weinbrenner Shoe Co., a company that’s been in the work boot-making business ever since the 1800s.
To give you a bit of backstory on how the Thorogood brand came to exist; back in the early 1910s, Weinbrenner Shoe Co. shifted from initially being in the cobblery business and started producing boots that were designed for specific jobs to address the needs and requirements of workers in different industries.
A concept that was pretty bizarre at the time but nevertheless gained popularity quickly even amongst the US Army.
By 1917, the company’s specialized premium heavy-duty work boots were introduced under the Thorogood brand, a name that’s been a worker’s favorite and trusted ever since.
Where are Thorogood work boots made?
Born and bred in the US Midwest, Thorogood’s work boots are union-made in the company’s factories located in the heart of the state of Wisconsin in Merril and Marshfield, which is where they’ve been produced since the company was created.
Thorogood is also one of the few remaining companies that still craft the majority of their work boots in the US along with being made by labor union workers, making them by all definitions made for workers, by workers.
Here’s where you can check where are work boots brands manufacture their boots if that’s something you’re interested to learn.
Who sells Thorogood work boots?
You can find Thorogood boots at most local safety boot and work boot footwear dealers.
Not to mention also being available on several online retail outlets such as Amazon, TheUnionBootpro, Boot Barn, MidwestBoots, as well as other authorized online stores listed on Thorogood’s website.
Are Thorogood work boots comfortable?
When it comes to working boots, comfort is right at the top of the list of requirements to be even worth considering, and at that, Thorogood passes the test.
Despite their rugged and sturdy look on the outside, Thorogood’s line of work boots are designed to be lightweight and are as equally comfortable as they are durable, allowing you to keep them on your feet for 8 hours straight and still feel snug.
On the inside, Thorogood work boots feature cushioned insoles and anti-fatigue materials to let you stand comfortably on your feet while you’re on the clock without feeling the brunt of a busy day’s workload.
Are Thorogood work boots waterproof?
Yes, several Thorogood work boots are waterproof. The company’s top line of work boots doesn’t even consider waterproofing to be an added option – it’s a necessity.
Since their work boots are created to endure some of the toughest and harshest job sites imaginable, it’s no surprise why waterproofing comes as standard.
Does Thorogood offer a warranty on their work boots?
All work boots bought from authorized resellers of Thorogood’s footwear benefit from a yearlong warranty, provided you have the original receipt.
However, do keep in mind that just as with other products, the company’s warranty only covers defects and issues from the factory
And since we’re talking about work boots which are by design meant to take a beating, damage from usage isn’t covered by their return or warranty policy.
By the way, check out the following blog post where our colleague Jeff is sharing his experience returning his pair of Thorogood work boots.
Are Thorogood work boots true to size?
Thorogood boots are designed to be true to size, but as any customer review will tell you, there are some essential factors that you need to consider before choosing a size:
#1 – If they’re lace-ups
A lace-up boot’s tightness can be adjusted based on how tight you want them to be, so if your work boots feel like they’re sliding off or are too tight despite being able to move your toes freely; you just need to make a tighter knot.
#2 – If they’re a pull-on
Unlike lace-up boots, you can’t change how tight your work boots will be, so you’ll want to make sure the work boots you buy are half a size bigger so that they won’t be too tight on your foot.
#3 – If they have a safety toe
Work boots with a safety toe should be half a size larger than your foot size to accommodate your foot’s flexibility, this applies to all work boots, Thorogoods included.
Don’t go overboard though, if your feet aren’t protected by the boot’s tip, then you won’t be benefiting from a safety toe boot’s main purpose.
#4 – If you wear thick socks
The type of socks you wear might not seem like a big deal, but if your work boot doesn’t have enough space for your foot, you’ll end up restricting your foot’s movement and trap excess heat.
So, it goes without saying that you’ll want to go half a size larger just to be on the safer side.
Remember, the golden rule is that if you need to force your foot into a boot and struggle to wiggle your toes or have to yank off your boots with force to get them off, you need to go a size or half a size larger; otherwise, you’ll be set for a sore foot before your shift is even over.
Still not sure about how to get the right fit? Continue reading to find out how.
#5 – Thorogood work boots size chart
If you’re feeling a bit uncertain about which size is right for you and are worried about getting the wrong size, we feel you, especially since your ability to perform your job counts on it.
Worry not though, Thorogood has a size chart that uses industry-standard measurements that you can use to get to the bottom of what’s right for your foot.
Alternatively, follow these steps and check out the size table taken from Thorogood themselves to know what’s your boot size:
- Put a paper on flat ground and stand on it while wearing slightly thick socks
- Use a pen to mark the end of your heel and the tip of your big toe
- Measure the space between the marks you drew and use the below inch-to-size table to determine your foot size
- If your measurement happens to be between two sizes or you have a foot larger than the other, go for the larger measurement.
Thorogood’s work boots aren’t just limited to men; some of their work boots are available in smaller sizes that accommodate female workers’ feet.
To know which Thorogood women’s work boots to get, use the size conversion chart below to determine the correct size.
For example: For a women’s size 6, go for a men’s size 4 boot
Width | Inches | Width | Inches |
---|---|---|---|
AA | 3 1/4″ | E | 4 1/8″ |
A | 3 7/16″ | EE or W | 4 5/16″ |
B or N | 3 5/8″ | EEE or XW | 4 1/2″ |
C | 3 13/16″ | 4E or H | 4 11/16″ |
D or M | 4″ | 6E | 4 7/8″ |

Another remark some of the users made is that the white sole looks excellent aesthetically And although you can clean your dirty work boots it won’t last long since the white color is a dirt magnet.
What colors do they come in?

- Black

And depending on the model, their work boots tend to feature combinations of color accents and aesthetics in the welt-stitch and outsoles with colors varying from black all the way to translucent and white.

What industries are Thorogood work boots good for?
Tested and certified to meet and exceed the strict safety standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ATSM) and based on the insights we’ve gathered from scouring through endless reviews from workers in various professions, Thorogood work boots are the perfect fit for:

- Ironworkers
- Boilermakers
- Sheetmetal workers
- Utility linemen
- Residential & commercial roofers
- Truckers
- Millwrights
- Assemblers
- Construction workers
- Farmers
- Welders
- Oil & gas workers
- Plumbers
- Factory workers
- Lumberjacks
And the list goes on.
Simply put, if you operate a demanding job that needs reliable workwear, Thorogood is a brand you’ll want to look at if you want boots that won’t quit on you.
The reason? Thorogood has been in the work boot-making business for over a century with its very origins tied to heavy-duty industries like mining, construction, and the petroleum industry.
And to this day, the company lives up to its legacy of giving working men and women the grip and durability needed to march on through a busy day to earn a living without compromising the comfort and safety of their feet.
Can you resole Thorogood work boots?
Yes, Thorogood work boots can be resoled and repaired; the company even has an in-house restoration service to get your work boots back in shape by the hands of the very craftsmen that made them in the first place.
It’s not every day that you see a company provide their own boots restoration service, so we were rather impressed to see Thorogood go the extra mile to extend the lifespan of a customer’s purchase.
Danner vs. Thorogood work boots
If you’re looking for American-made work boots, you’ll find Danner right there next to Thorogood at the top of the list when it comes to durability and safety.
Like Thorogood, Danner has a long history of being a worker’s favorite, especially in harsh outdoor terrains and extreme weather conditions.
While there are more similarities than there are differences between the two, Thorogood work boots have more distinct-looking models and require little to no breaking-in.
Compared to Danner work boots which tend to stick to a traditional appearance while also having several reviews that mention how stiff their work boots are around the ankles and need to get broken into for about a month until they feel right.
Red Wing vs. Thorogood work boots
When you think of moc-toe work boots, you’re either going to think of Red Wing or Thorogood; two of the most iconic American work boots brands famous for producing moc toe boots that constantly go neck to neck against each other in most reviews.
While we can go on and on about aesthetics and design details, we’re here to settle the score once and for all between the two from a worker’s perspective and break it down.
Both work boot brands are made out of durable leather and look very similar, but that’s where the similarities end.
Thorogood boots on one hand are designed to be worn in job environments and pack in more foot support and protection for heavy-duty workers.
On the other hand, Red Wing’s boots tend to be lighter and more flexible for lightweight work.
However, that comes at a cost of having fewer safety and support features to handle extreme conditions.
Irish Setter vs. Thorogood work boots
If you’re used to working with heavy equipment, you’re bound to see other workers revving a pair of Irish Setters or Thorogoods, and it’s not hard to see why since both work boots rank very close to each other in terms of safety features and ruggedness.
While both brands pack a punch, the main difference between these two heavyweights is the difference in their prices.
Irish Setter work boots are imported and often come at a lower price point, whereas Thorogoods are handcrafted and assembled in the United States by unionized workers, causing them to be slightly more expensive.
However, in terms of quality both match up to each other since Irish Setter is made by the same folks that produce Red Wing’s premium leather work boots.
Overall, choosing between Thorogood and Irish Setter work boots ultimately just comes down to preference.
Carolina vs. Thorogood work boots
Equally matched in both their origins as companies that specialize in work boots for different types of jobs, Carolina and Thorogood boots share most of the same safety features and the ability to be resoled which you’d come to expect as a standard from premium boots of such caliber.
While not exactly a major difference, the main difference between both brands lies in the styles that they produce across their lines of models which look distinctly different from each other.

Bottom line: Is Thorogood a good work boot brand to buy?
Simply put, yes, and not just because we happen to like what we’ve seen after checking out all the reviews to make this article, but it’s the fact that even if you don’t like a specific model of their boots, there are plenty others to check out.
Thorogood has anything but a shortage of options for the working man and woman to choose from no matter the industry they’re in.
And the fact that they specialize in work boots and are one of the few brands that still produce most of their boots in the US makes them the perfect choice for people who crave authentic American quality boots that won’t quit halfway right when they’re needed most.
The only thing left to ask now though is, which one will you go for the next time you’re on the lookout for a new pair of work boots?
