What You Must Know About Slip-On Work Before Buying Them
Let’s answer a few questions you might have about slip-on work boots. If there’s something I haven’t covered or I’ve missed, please leave a comment below and I’ll do my best to answer it.
Are slip on work boots good?
Yes, slip on work boots are good. It always depends on what are you going to use them for or what job do you have.
For some tasks slip on work are great. Gardening or fishing could be an example. Whereas using a pair of slip-on work boots to do roofing work it’s a bad idea.
That’s because these are not agile at all and they are bulky. On the roof (and similar jobs) you need to have the ability to be and flex freely.
Are slip on work boots bad for your feet? Are they safe?
Again, whether slip on work boots are bad or good for your feet depends on what kind of tasks you’re going to perform whilst wearing them.
The biggest downside to slip-on work boots is that they don’t provide any ankle support. So if you work for example on a roof as we said earlier you can easily roll your ankles as you’re moving up and down a high steep roof.
The same thing can happen if you work on uneven terrain or excavations. One step in the wrong place and you’ve sprinkled your ankle putting you in bed for a few days.
This is one of the reasons many big construction sites have banned these types of work boots. So make sure that you’re allowed to wear them before spending your money!
How to break in slip on work boots?
In my experience, slip-on work didn’t need that much breaking in. I think that the elastic on these types of boots helps the boot be more flexible and it doesn’t create as many hot spots as a lace-up work boot would.
The harshest time I had with a slip-on work boot is when the top of the boot is so stiff that presses so hard against my foot that I feel it was cutting my foot’s blood circulation.
That it’s something I’ve experienced with many slip-on work boots, but most of them were fine by the end of my first shift.
Those that are a bit more stubborn I oil them with mink oil or boots oil and that makes the leather softer and helps break them in faster. Here’s how I break in my work boots if you want to learn more.
How do slip on work fit?
They should feel a bit snug at the beginning. Since these boots have no laces, manufacturers build the boots in such a way that the boot hugs your feet.
They do this in order to compensate for the lack of laces. Otherwise, the boots will feel like flip-flops on your feet.
And because of this, you might not be able to use orthotic insoles in this type of work boots since the ceiling of the boot is quite low for you to add an insole.
If you want to add insoles to your slip-on work boots but you’re not sure if there’s going to be enough space in the boots you’ll have to try a few models and see which one fits best.
This is best done at your local store of course but many times they don’t have a lot of models in stock. If you buy online you have a lot more options.
And you can take advantage of programs such as Prime Try Before You Buy by Amazon where you can try a few pairs of boots before you actually buy them.
Are these supposed to somewhat move in the heel area when walking?
This is the main downside of wearing slip-on work boots. That no matter which brand or model you go for your heel WILL slip inside the boot.
That’s due to the lack of laces. Since you don’t have laces there’s nothing you can do to make the boots stick and wrap around your feet.
And that’s why your heel will move inside any slip-on work boot.

For the last year or so I kept hearing my colleagues talking about Australian-made work boots and how good they are. So I decided to get my hands on one of these bad boys.
And I have to agree with my colleagues. These Blundstone slip-on work boots are some of the most comfortable safety boots I ever had.
They do have things I don’t like but I’ll leave you a link to the review so you can check it out.
Blundstone Bl990 Slip On Work Boots Full Review
They come with a steel toe cap which will keep your toes safe from falling or rolling objects. For increased durability, these Blundstone slip-on boots come with an anti-scuff rubber toe enforcement.
This should help the boots last longer especially for those of you that bend or crouch a lot in your line of work.
It’s not the cheapest work boot on our list but it’s definitely worth it since the quality IS there.
This Blundstone Bl990 boot could be a great boot for welders, mechanics, electricians, landscaping. Also is a good work boot for construction workers although you should ask your manager if you can use these types of boots on your site.
Some sites (usually big projects) won’t allow you to work wearing slip-on, pull-on, or Wellington work boots.

For example, this slip-on work boot comes with what Ariat calls “Waterproof PRO construction” which makes these work boots waterproof and fully insulated. This type of boot construction ensures keeping your feet dry and warm.
Even though they say “fully insulated” I’d be careful buying these boots thinking you’ll be working in snow and not feel the cold.
Compared to the Blundstone from above, these Ariats don’t have anti-scuff reinforcement over the toe cap to help prevent premature damage to the leather at the toe area.
Kneeling, bending could easily scratch the leather or even rip it leaving the toe cap exposed.
If you’re on your feet all day long these slip-on work boots come with a helpful 4LR tech in the sole. Basically, this means the outsole has four layers of materials that will provide a lot of cushioning avoiding foot fatigue.
Great choice if you work in a factory, warehouse, mechanic, yard, or as a general contractor.

This work boot is slip-resistant which makes it a good work boot for mechanics and other jobs where the floor might be slippery either because it’s wet, greasy, or oily.
One thing to keep in mind when you buy these boots is that their soles are coated with silicon to protect them in transport.
This makes them actually quite slippery for the first time you put them on. Before you go to work in them make sure you scratch those soles with some sandpaper or a wire brush. Or simply put them on and scrub them on an unfinished concrete floor.

These boots are insulated. They come with 200g of insulation and you might say it’s not much.
But according to the manufacturer, these boots should keep your feet warm at temperatures up to -25°F/-32°C (that’s very cold). I never had the chance to work at such low temperatures.
Additionally these KEEN slip on boots feature a thermal heat shield footbed that capture warmth and provides undernfooth comfort. Pretty need!

In terms of comfort, these Skechers slip-on boots feature a memory foam footbed that makes them really comfortable to wear for long periods of time.
The insole is removable so you can replace it with another one that’s best for your feet requirements or conditions (flat feet, plantar fasciitis, etc)

These are soft-toe work boots so you won’t be able to wear them in some industries but if you’re a warehouse manager that spends your time in the office and a few times per day needs to be on the floor, these Danner slip-on low-cut work boots are great for that.
The upper is made out of durable full-grain leather that you can oil and polish to make sure you look sharp every day.
These Danner low-cut slip-on work boots are handcrafted and they’re put together via a method called the Stitchdown sole construction method that makes the boot last longer than other construction methods.
In terms of comfort, Danner has you covered there as well by adding a PU (polyurethane) footbed in this boot.
That’s very soft which is what will provide you with the cushioning that you need during your long days at work.

This is the last wedge sole work boot in today’s round-up. These look so cool you won’t even want to wear them, especially if you work in construction where they’ll get very dirty, very fast.
I wasn’t aware of this brand until recently as I was doing research for this article and I liked it very much. This boot not only looks good but they have some great features.
In terms of comfort, these Avenger slip-on work boots come with a composite toe cap, and when you add the wedge sole in the mix, you come up with a very lightweight work boot.
Additionally, the boot comes with a fiberglass shank to provide you with more stability and support under your feet.
Safety wise, in addition to the safety toe cap these slip-on work boots feature a puncture-resistant midsole. It’s not clear if the midsole is made of steel or Kevlar fabric or something else.
What’s clear is that this boot is able to reduce the chances of your feet getting injured by a nail or screw or anything sharp laying on the floor.
Also, the bumper toe and heel rubber reinforcement should help increase the lifespan of the work boots by not allowing scratches and scuffs directly to the leather when kneeling, crouching, or hitting things around.

The boot features some deep lugs on the sole so if you work in the mud and soft ground, in the garden, or at the farm, these are the perfect boots for you.
The boot I’ve featured here specifically has a soft toe but if you need something for construction or an industry where you’re required to wear a safety, Caterpillar has a steel toe version of this boot that you check out here.
They’re a bit bulkier than the soft toe version but that should be expected due to the steel toe cap that needs to go in the boot.
Some users have used these work boots to pour concrete and the concrete would not eat up the material which of course is good since you don’t want wet concrete touching your skin (it can cause serious burns).

These types of slip-on work boots are great for truckers since you can put them on and take them off quickly as you’re in and out of your cab. They’re practical and comfortable.
I’m a crane operator myself and I like to take my boots off when in the cab and let my feet bread. If I need to come out of the cab quickly, I just slip in them and carry on with what I need to do.

These Carolina slip-on work boots also have a toe reinforcement that they call:” Tiger Tip” which is very helpful when it comes to increasing the durability of the boot.
This Tiger Tip is just a rubber reinforcement as we’ve seen in other boots included in this review that helps the boot last longer by not allowing the leather on the toe to get scuffed.
The outsole of the boot is made out of rubber that helps the boot to keep you on your feet when working on slippery floors since the boot is rated as oil & slip-resistant.

I’ve looked everywhere to find an ankle-high slip-on work boot with met guard protection for you … but I couldn’t find any that’s not a pull-on type boot like these Timberland PRO True Grit.
An alternative would be to get yourself a pair of slip-on work boots that you like and then add an external met guard that you can buy separately like this one:
If that’s not an option then you can for these 10″ tall work boots that come with an internal metatarsal guard protection.
They’re robust as they can come, perfect work boots for oil riggers, construction workers, or any heavy-duty job out there.
In terms of safety, these Timberland PRO not only have a met guard but also feature a composite safety toe cap. Basically, these are like a bunker for your feet.
Just because they’re rugged doesn’t mean they’re uncomfortable or heavy for that matter. They come with “Anti Fatigue Technology” built-in. And that’s a fancy way of saying that the boot has a PU footbed that provides cushioning, absorbing shocks created with each step.
