Reviews of the top 12 best waterproof work boots for the money

Alright, let’s jump into some detailed reviews of each one of these waterproof work boots we’ve included in today’s round-up.

1. Timberland PRO Rigmaster

Editor’s Choice

Best Steel Toe Waterproof Work Boot

The Timberland PRO Rigmaster is engineered with a waterproof membrane and premium full-grain leather to keep your feet dry, comfortable, and protected.

The upper of this men’s work boot features a mesh lining that helps wick away moisture from the footbed for superior breathability, while the removable EVA foam footbed provides cushioning and support.

This work boot also has an oil-resistant rubber lug outsole for excellent traction on various surfaces.

The steel toe on this men’s work boot will protect you from all of the dangers of a modern worksite.

The work boots have a special design to stop them from hurting you. This is because the shoe has shock-absorbing technology that returns energy back to the foot.

This gives you long-lasting comfort, no matter how long the work shift.  Do you want to see more comfy boots examples? Here’s a great post about the most comfortable work boots for men and women. We’re sure you’ll enjoy it!

PROS

  • Exceptionally slip-resistant sole will keep you upright throughout the working day
  • Steel toe meets requisite ATSM standards and the steel toe cap protect you from all of the drops of a dangerous worksite
  • Anti-fatigue technology will keep you comfortable all day long

CONS

  • A Steel Toe cap makes the work boot much heavier than a composite toe or soft toe. They are also often a lot less comfortable.

2. Carhartt 6 Inch Wedge

Best Soft Toe Waterproof Work Boot

The best soft-toe waterproof work boot in our roundup is the Carhartt Men’s 6 Inch Waterproof Wedge Soft Toe Work Boot.

The Storm Defender technology which this boot utilizes will repel water and dirt on contact with the surface of your fabric.

Storm Defender technology is a coating that protects fabrics from water, stains, and soilion, without the chemicals or fragrances found in other repellent finishes. The silicone-based protection offers the best protection on any fabric for clothes, furniture curtains, and upholstery from rain, spills, and pet accidents.

Storm Defender has been awarded LA’s Best Award by West Coast Women Entrepreneurs Association for 12 years running!

Wedge sole work boots have a larger surface area at the bottom than heel or arch boots.

This makes it an ideal work boot for those who work on concrete, as it means far more of advantage for this when working on concrete is that far more of the work boot is in contact with the ground at any one point while you are walking around.

It also has a removable insole, for adjustable sizing and comfort.

Finally, the soft toe makes the work boot lightweight. This is an overall excellent choice if you are looking for a work boot that will be light on your feet and avoid foot pains. You can always go to the Carhartt work boots review page to find out more in-depth info about the brand.

PROS

  • Wedge sole work boots are very comfortable as they disperse shock more evenly across your foot, preventing the buildup of pains
  • High quality, oil-grained upper leather for excellent durability and strength
  • Storm Defender Waterproofing technology will keep your feet dry

CONS

  • Rubber toe caps can crack, and some workplace safety officers may insist on steel toe caps as they can often resist more extreme drops and shocks.

3. Wolverine Overpass

Best Waterproof Composite
Toe Work Boots

The WOLVERINE Overpass is the best waterproof composite toe boot on the market.

Weighing in at just 1.75 pounds each, your feet will feel much lighter in these bad boys than in other brands, preventing you from exhausting yourself on the worksite.

But the lightweightedness is not a substitute for safety. The boots meet all the requisite safety standards that you would expect from other toe caps.

The composite toe cap gives you all the safety protection of a steel toe cap with none of the extra weight.

The slip resistant soles also mean you won’t have to worry too much about falling over whilst on the worksite, even if you’re working in an environment with a lot of oil or slippery liquids

The boot contains beautiful Summer Brown colors and vermillion rubber soling that make this boot one of the better-looking work boots included in our round-up. You don’t exactly buy work boots for style, but it certainly doesn’t hurt.

The Overpass also features the best in waterproofing and ventilative technologies, including construction from waterproof leather which will protect your feet from rainy weather.

Finally, the boot also comes with an Ortholite cushioned footbed which delivers a combination of temperature regulation and comfort, perfect for summer wearing.

This footbed is removable, so if it isn’t working for you you aren’t stuck with it.

Anyway, if you’re new to Wolverine and don’t know much about the brand, we invite you to read if Wolverine work boots are any good in this post here. (Lots of good info in there)

PROS

  • Removable footbed for adjustable sizing and comfort
  • Slip, oil and water resistant
  • Premium waterproof leather, keeping your feet dry on the worksite
  • Contour welt construction will bend with your feet at crucial points, preventing the development of any feet pains

CONS

  • Some safety officers on your work site may insist on a steel toe over a composite toe cap, check with them before purchasing

4. Dunlop Durapro

Cheap Rubber Work Boots
For Concrete Pouring

The Dunlop 8908611 DURAPRO Boots are the best choice for workers looking for a completely waterproof pair of work boots.

They are made from PVC, which makes them both waterproof and chemical resistant.

Don’t forget that non-waterproof boots do not only allow water through water, but also dangerous chemicals.

Workers who work with wet concrete need to keep their feet safe from both water and dangerous chemicals.

We have a more extensive list of some great work boots for pouring concrete here.

So the advantage of a PVC ‘wellington type’ such as The Dunlop DURAPRO Boots is that they will keep you safe from both water and concrete.

Customers who have bought these work boots love the slip resistant PVC outsole that allows them to get on with the day, regardless of their working conditions.

The height of the work boot also allows for you to tuck your trousers into the back of your boots whenever you want, and also provide excellent ankle and feet support.

Finally, though they don’t look like typical ‘professional’ working boots, these boots still have a steel toe cap, ensuring you can remain protected from drops on the work-site.

PROS

  • Steel toe cap will protect you from dangers
  • Pull-on work boots- no fiddling around with laces (easy to put them on and take them out)
  • Comfortable and slip-resistant

CONS

  • No laces may make it harder to get a good, well-adjusted fit

5. Ariat Workhog

Great Pull On Waterproof Work Boots

The Ariat WorkHog Waterproof Western work boots are built to last, designed with Waterproof Pro technology to keep out the wet elements and snow. Wear them in any weather to keep your feet comfortable all day long.

These men’s waterproof western work boots feature a pull-on design for easy wear. They’re crafted with Ariat’s ATS Max platform and a cushioned EVA midsole, thus ensuring that you have stability and can reduce foot fatigue for proper body alignment.

Ariat’s ATS Max platform provides maximum torsional stability for reduction of foot fatigue and proper body alignment.

The Durated Outsole is both oil and slip resistant, giving you excellent balance and allowing you to work with confidence.

One final benefit of this work boot is the unique, patent-pending, U-Turn Entry System makes this work boot unique in this roundup for being able to fit on you easily regardless of your feet shape and size.

So no fiddling with annoying laces, or even worse, tripping over the laces as you move around the worksite. For more similar boots, check out our best slip-on work boots on the market page.

PROS

  • Made by Ariat, an innovative, well-established company that is always providing the latest technology in durability and waterproofing
  • Unique, patent-pending, U-Turn Entry System, making it easier to put on and take-off than many pull-on work boots/wellingtons.
  • Durated outsole for excellent stability
  • ATS platform will provide you with torsional stability

CONS

  • No laces may make it harder to get a precise fit for this work boot, though this should hopefully be solved in part by the U-turn entry system

6. Danner Vicious

Waterproof Insulated Work Boots

This brilliant pair of Danner work boots feature 100% Gore-Tex lining.  Gore-Tex is considered one of the best waterproofing membranes on the market owing to the nine-billion pores per square inch which ensures no water gets through.

This means your feet stay dry from external moisture, but the membrane also allows for moisture (sweat) that has built up within your work boots

They also feature vibram soles, a technology dating back to the 1930s. Vibram soles are slip-resistant, long-lasting and waterproof, a perfect combination for the worker in all conditions.

Vibram rubber soles were designed for mountaineers to stay steady on their feet, and the first ascent of K2 was completed using vibram rubber soles.

So if these boots can go up against the toughest mountains, they will be more than enough to handle the difficulties of your worksite.

As the name of the boot also implies, the boot contains 400g of Thinsulate material, ideal for keeping your feet warm in the cold months. Don’t forget to check our best for work boots for winter time to see more insulated models similar to this Danner.

Still not sure about this brand? Check out if Danner’s work boots are any good in this article here.

PROS

  • Vibram sole keeps you upright through the long winter months
  • Lightweight and athletic performance of Danner’s Trailguard platform
  • 100% waterproof and breathable Gore-Tex membrane lining

CONS

  • 400g of Thinsulate may not make these work boots suitable for the coldest winter months

7. Irish Setter Kastoa

Waterproof Work Boot With Side Zip

The Irish Setter Men’s Kastoa 6″ side-zip safety toe work boot is a durable boot that offers comfort and protection. The upper of this work boot is made with full grain leather for durability and long-lasting wear.

A padded collar and tongue help to provide support, while the mesh lining helps to keep your feet cool and dry throughout the day.

An EVA midsole provides cushioning, while the rubber outsole will deliver traction on any terrain you may encounter.

It has a waterproof leather upper with a side zipper for easy on and off.

The outsole of this boot is durated which means it will not crack or break down over time, so you can keep your feet protected from the elements and working hard in these boots for years to come!

PROS

  • Heat resistant outsole, perfect for keeping your feet cool and safe
  • Deep treads for ideal traction
  • Waterproof using Gore-tex technology
  • You can order these work boots in either steel or composite toe cap

CONS

  • Some users who have bought this product have expressed concern that the zipper is slightly fragile

8. Georgia Work Boots

Leather Waterproof Work
Boots For Loggers

The Georgia Boot Men’s Loggers are made of 100% leather and imported. These waterproof work boots feature a steel toe, lace-up closure, logo patch at the tongue, and rear pull loop. They have an 8-inch height and weigh 6.1 pounds per pair for a size 10.

These work boots are designed to provide you with all the comfort and support that you need as a logger or even as a construction worker who spends most of his time on the floor

The abrasion-resistant rubber outsole also features a deep tread that will keep you upright all day long.

If you’re on your feet a lot, or if you work in an area where there may be heavy items to pick up, it’s worth considering a good core of support for your feet and ankles. The taller the boots are, the more supportive they’ll be.

These work boots are eight inches in height for a size ten, meaning you will be provided with excellent support and a reduced risk of ‘rolling’.

Taller boots will also protect against debris getting in and protecting the feet from severe heat generated by the ground or equipment surfaces that transfer significant amounts of heat.

Customers who have purchased this pair of work boots love how durable they are, with one reviewer working in water management commenting how their feet remained dry for 10 hour+ shifts and how long-lasting they are at their job.

PROS

  • The height of the work boots will give you extra support as you move around the worksite
  • Excellent, slip-resistant outsole
  • Protective steel toe cap that will protect you from the dangers of a work-site.

CONS

  • The height of the work boot will make the boot slightly less flexible
  • Six pounds- very heavy even for a steel toe cap boot

9. Caterpillar Salvo

Slip Resistant Waterproof Work Boots

The Salvo 8″ Waterproof Boot by Caterpillar is a classic work boot that features 100% waterproof leather upper and rubber outsole. This men’s tall boot has an oil-resistant, slip-resistant rubber sole for traction on wet surfaces and a steel toe to protect against impact.

One customer who bought these work boots who works long days in the great outdoors said they were the ‘Best Work Boots I Ever Owned’ and that they balanced the toughness of a professional pair of work boots with the comfort of slippers

PROS

  • Waterproof leather upper that will keep your feet dry
  • The work boots utilize a T42 rubber outsole for additional traction, even on wet or oily surfaces
  • Nylex™ Sock Liner wicks away moisture from the foot to keep it dry and comfortable

CONS

  • Some customers were disappointed by the lack of durability- one driver finding them not keeping together

10. Keen Pittsburgh

Lightweight Waterproof Work
Boots For Walking

Work boots don’t just have to be for the worksite. The KEEN Utility Men’s Pittsburgh 6″ Steel Toe Waterproof Work Boot is an ideal choice for those looking to combine hiking with a hard day’s work

One particularly unique feature of the Keen Pittsburgh is the asymmetrical steel toes. This means that the steel toes are specially designed for the shapes of your feet, and are not proportioned in the same way that could be uncomfortable.

So unlike other steel toe work boots, these should not pinch at your feet and cause severe discomfort.

There is also a removable metatomical dual-density EVA footbed. Metatomical means they are anatomically designed to provide better support than the footbeds present.

PROS

  • Almost uniquely comfortable metatomical EVA footbed
  • Asymmetrical steel toes for excellent comfort
  • Locking metal lace hooks for extra security

CONS

  • Six inches is slightly short for a work boot- will not provide you with as much support as comparable brands

11. Thorogood American Heritage

Waterproof Work Boots Made In The US (Great For Summer)

The Thorogood Men’s American Heritage 6″ Moc Toe, MAXwear Wedge Safety Boot are an ideal pair of American-made work boots for this summer.

Being made in the USA, Thorogood has been providing high-quality, American-made workwear since 1892. By buying these boots, you are therefore contributing to their mission of supporting American jobs during this long period of global outsourcing.

However, as well as making an ethical consumer statement, buying these boots will also be amazing for your feet.

The Ultimate Shock Absorption footbed on Poron comfort cushion insole will provide your feet with comfort and stability, as will the fiberglass shank

Fiberglass is a fibrous material made from glass fibers that can be applied to the shanks of work boots for added support. It works by compressing underneath the arch of your foot while providing some cushioning from possible shock.

It also has gripping qualities and this helps keep you stable when your feet might move around during the working day.

And the steel toe protection will keep your feet safe from drops and dangers on the work-site. The steel toe meets the requisite

Finally, the oil-tanned leather makes this work boot waterproof and will ensure your feet remain dry all day long.

This pair of work boots also utilise Goodyear storm welt construction which utilises extra width in the construction that allows the welt to be bent upwards, creating a seal around the junction between the upper and the mid-sole.

Aptly named, the Storm welt is considered to offer greater moisture protection than a Goodyear welt.

So these are perfect work boots for a storm, as well as the summer months. Here’s our best summer working boots if you want to see more competing models.

PROS

  • Made in the USA by a reputable, well-established manufacturer of work boots. Buying these boots supports US jobs
  • Fiberglass shank for additional comfort and stability
  • Goodyear storm welt construction, which provides additional protection from wet weather compared to regular construction
  • Slip-resistant outsole

CONS

12. Maelstrom FORCE

Waterproof Work Boots Under $100

If you are looking for a solid pair of the best affordable work boots, then the Maelstrom Men’s Waterproof Military Tactical Duty Work Boot is an excellent choice.

Despite coming in at such an excellent price point, $1 from every sale of these affordable work boots go towards the Boot Campaign, a charity for veterans transitioning into civilian life. So by buying these boots you are supporting the men and women who served their country.

However, these work boots are not just good for your wallet and social wellbeing. They also contain a number of outstanding features that will keep your feet dry and comfortable.

For example, the work boot utilises a durable rubber outsole that is engineered for maximum grip on the various terrains.

There is also a composite, the advantage of which is that it usually provides largely the same degree of support and comfort whilst weighing a lot less than a steel toe cap.

PROS

  • At a very low price point, these boots are incredibly affordable
  • Proceeds from every sale go to charity
  • Heavy-duty zipper so you can take the boots off and put them on quickly
  • Utilizes Dri-Lex highly breathable waterproof membrane liner

CONS

  • Some users who have bought this pair of work boots have expressed disappointment with the minimal arch support and general lack of comfort in these boots

Buyers Guide: What to look for in a good waterproof work boot?

1. Good waterproof material the boot it’s made from

Gore-Tex is a good waterproof material that does not allow water in or out. Gore-Tex is a patented fabric only available in selected work boots that uses tiny polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) fibers to create a molecular lattice.

Gore-Tex is able to repel liquids by overlapping the PTFE and binding them together so they cannot get between the fibers, and it takes in oxygen from outside which diffuses into its microenvironment.

Another is PVC; several waterproof work boots are wellingtons or ‘rigger’ work boots.

The Maelstrom Men’s also utilises Dri-Lex which is a patented waterproof material that has been developed to provide additional comfort and breathability, as well as improve the lifelike look of textiles.

Dri-lex is manufactured by combining two fibers with differing mechanical properties: polyester and rubber.

Polyester holds up to liquid but doesn’t insulate when wet. Rubber wet-fits tightly against the body and provides insulation even though it’s also wet.

The combination prevents water from seeping through the garment and passes perspiration vapor while holding up to liquid penetration on outer surfaces such as trouser cuffs or long sleeves.

this is a worker wearing one of the best waterproofed work boots on the marke whilst working on wet surfaces

2. Is the boot waterproof or water-resistant? (what’s the difference you might ask)

There is a difference between waterproof and water-resistant!

Waterproof boots are designed to keep water out while working.

Water-resistant boots have a sealant that repels water while you work but they don’t cover the top of the boot so it will saturate through when wetter conditions develop.

They’re not engineered specifically to keep your feet dry while working, but rather protect against actual soaking in most cases with lower-leg coverage.

If you expect wet environment work, then waterproof boots will do better than water resistant.

3. Insulation (if you work in cold weather)

There are a number of insulative materials to look out for when you are shopping for work boots such as 3M Thinsulate which is used by the US military and Gore-Tex.

Do waterproof work boots need breaking in?

Just like any other work boots, waterproof work boots should have some break-in time or you will end up with sore feet.

Workers who are on their feet all day long need to find shoes that will provide the best support for their particular needs.

The waterproof membrane needs time to form a bond!

How to maintain your waterproof work boots

The best way to keep waterproof work boots well.., waterproof is to clean the outside of the boot with a sponge and soapy water and clean the ridges of the sole lining where boot meets rubber.

If your boots are maintained well, they will stay waterproof

What can you use to waterproof a pair of leather work boots?

Believe it or not, wax sealing or silicone sprays are both excellent ways of waterproofing a broken pair of leather boots.

For silicone sprays simply apply an even layer of spray across the boot. Ensure that you do so in a well-ventilated area to avoid fumes stinking out your house.

If using wax, which is a much more durable method of waterproofing old leather boots, heat the wax and use your fingers (wearing gloves is advised) to rub the wax into the boot.

Then place your boots in a warm, dry area for the boots to dry out.

Both silicone sprays and waxes will succeed in waterproofing leather boots and prolonging their active life.

How long do waterproof work boots last?

How long a pair of waterproof work boots lasts will of course depend on how much stress you put them under, how often you wear them, and the quality of the craftsmanship.

But as a general rule of thumb you should replace your waterproof work boots every 2-3 years.

Waterproof synthetic materials don’t protect against water in the same way that leather does, so the normal expected lifetime of a boot is usually no more than 3-4 years.

There are some exceptions to this because brands use different types of material and there are other variables to consider, but for most people it’s best not to buy expensive boots if they plan on wearing them out quickly.

How do you know when your waterproof work boots need replacing? Besides looking tattered or torn up after 4 years, signs may include bulging soles or heels from overuse, noticeable leaks at seams and bad odors – especially if the seal isn’t sealed anymore from wear and tear.

Can you re waterproof work boots? How?

You can re-waterproof boots with a waterproofing spray. This includes both rub-on or brush on treatments and sprays that are applied to the inside of the shoe.

The number and strength of sprays used also varies depending on how damaged your boots have become, but it’s always best to consult our local cobbler or workmen for professional advice when choosing a waterproofing agent.

Always follow the instructions provided with any agent.

How to keep waterproof work boots dry on the inside?

To keep waterproof boots dry, lay the boots open and work another roomy boot tight inside to wash out.

The best solution for a wet interior is to tighten the large boot into the smaller one and then put them in each other’s place.

This also can be done with jeans or trousers as well!

Can you replace the waterproof membrane in your work boots?

Yes. The waterproof membrane on a pair of work boots should be repaired or replaced if the following three conditions are met:

  1. There is a puncture or tear in the membrane
  2. There is dried up water inside the boots that cannot be removed with a wet cloth
  3. The outside leather of either boot has cracks. If your boots meet these requirements, try replacing both waterproof membranes before they separate from each other and start cracking

To replace the waterproof membrane you’ll have to

  1. Remove the old membrane using a putty knife
  2. Clean any dirt and grime off the same area that was just removed from with some rubbing alcohol and allow to dry
  3. Apply an adhesive to one side of the new waterproof membrane, make sure you’re stretching out all wrinkles. Too much air in between will cause bubbles.
  4. Apply only enough pressure with your fingertips when smoothing out bubbles to get them down, not so hard as oiling yourself up.
  5. Lay it onto your work boot ensuring there are no gaps where water could intrude

Where can you buy good waterproof work boots?

I prefer to buy my boots online (it saves me a lot of time of going to the store).

So a great option is Amazon of course. Since they have A LOT of models and brands for every taste and preference. Scroll back up to the reviews section to find a model that suits your needs.
